Nicole Camille Escovedo known now as Nicole Richie was born on September 21, 1981 in Berkeley, California.  Her biological father, Peter Michael Escovedo was a member of Lionel Richie’s band.  For certain financial reasons, when Nicole was three she moved into Richie’s home with her biological father. 
 

Six years later, when Nicole was nine years old, Lionel Richie and his wife Brenda Harvey-Richie officially adopted Nicole.  Nicole attended a prestigious Los Angeles school growing up, where she met Paris Hilton.  Paris Hilton is one of the heirs to all the entire Hilton industry.  The two became like two peas in a pod, they were inseparable, but eventually their decision started to take tolls on their lives. 
 

They graduated from High School and Nicole decided to continue to go on to college.  She enrolled in the University of Arizona, but got into a lot of partying, using drugs and drinking alcohol, which led to her dropping out after only attending two years of school.  In 2002, Nicole tried to put together her own rock band with Josie Maran, but got involved into drugs once more and found herself being arrested for having heroin on her when she got pulled over in Malibu.                       
 

Nicole plead guilty to all charges and was ordered to attend a rehabilitation program in addition to being on probation.  At the end of 2003, Nicole signed on to The Simple Life television series with best friend Paris Hilton.  The show aired in December and became a huge hit.
