Material Girl, Madonna is one of the greatest performers of all time.  American pop singer is also a songwriter, dancer, producer, author, fashion icon and actress.  She is a six times Grammy and one time Golden Globe award winner.  She is known for her off the wall and ambitious music videos as well as her use of explicit sexual and religious themes in her work.   
 

Over the years, her albums have been tremendously successful worldwide.  She has sold over 200 million albums worldwide.  Madonna is amazing and the highest earning female singer of all time, breaking numerous records.  In 2000, Guinness World Records listed Madonna as the most successful female recording artist of all time. 
 

Years ago, Madonna was a nude model to make ends meet.  She worked very hard and even took on more than one job.  However, she knew that one day everything would pay off and that is exactly what happened.  She then studied with American dancer and choreographer Martha Graham which later led her to perform for many modern dance companies. 
 

In 1979, Madonna danced during Patrick Hernandez world tour.  From here, she formed her own rock band, the Breakfast Club.  She sang, played the guitar and the drums in the band.  Her first band led to forming another band and so on, until she became a solo artist.  Before she went solo, Madonna and her former boyfriend produced and wrote dance songs, which were eventually discovered by record producer, Mark Kamins.  
 

When Madonna signed with Sire Records and became a solo artist, people thought she was a black artist.  At first her music was not very successful; her single didn’t hit the Billboard Hot 100’s List.  However, she was getting a lot of airplay on radio stations and her single became a hit on the Billboard Hot Dance/Club Charts.  For this reason, the executives of Sire Records wanted to finance an album for Madonna.     
 

Her music was becoming more and more popular and so was her style.  All the girls were dressing just like her. 
After a few let downs came international successes.  Her tracks hit the top of the Billboard Hot 100 Singles Chart and continued to stay at the top of the chart week after week.  Madonna’s fans continued to grow and after her first live performance at the MTV Video Music Awards her fan base was worldwide. 
 

In 1985, nude black and white photos of Madonna in the late 1970’s were published in Penthouse and Playboy.  She was outraged when she found out that the pictures were published.  Controversy grew, so Madonna backed off because she didn’t want anything to be held against her in the later years. 
 

Madonna still to this day reigns supreme.  She is the mother to three children, Lourdes (9), Rocco (5) and the newest edition to the family, David Banda (1).  Her husband, Guy Richie has been in the material girl’s life since 1999.  The couple was married December 22, 2000 in Scotland.  Currently, Madonna keeps her personal life out of the spotlight, but it a true superstar.
